Approximately 600 movies are released in theaters in North America each year. Of these 600 movies, 599 are invariably about vampires. It's impossible to know for sure, but Let Me In will probably be #372.
Despite the familiarity of the subject matter, the below trailer is actually kind of creepy. It's based on the novel Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist, which was previously adapted into an acclaimed Swedish film in 2008 (the title has evidently been simplified for North American audiences). The director is Matt Reeves, who (thankfully) seems to have misplaced the camcorder that he used to shoot Cloverfield. Also, the two leads are Kodi Smit-McPhee (excellent as the boy in The Road) and Chloë Moretz (excellent as Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass), so this has a fairly good shot at not being terrible.
Let Me In will be released in October, but (sadly) it won't mark the end of the vampire craze. According to Vampire Digest, the trend will carry on well into 2011. Here are five vampire movies that we can all look forward to seeing a year from now:
Dark Shadows: Based on the Gothic soap opera from the late 1960s. In addition to vampires, it may also include werewolves, ghosts, zombies, witches, time travel, and alternate dimensions. Although the project is still in development, it will likely mark the ninth collaboration between Tim Burton and Johnny Depp.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter: It's probably safe to assume that this is based on the popular graphic novel and not on Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. Tim Burton produces, Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) directs.
Blood Oath: The story of a vampire that hunts terrorists. It sounds like a stupid idea, but the book it's based on has been getting positive reviews. No star is attached as of yet, but this sounds like the perfect opportunity for Kiefer Sutherland to combine his roles in 24 and The Lost Boys.
Dracula Year Zero: The origin story of Vlad the Impaler. Not to be confused with Roberto Rossellini's neo-realist classic Germany Year Zero. Sam Worthington and director Alex Proyas (Dark City) are currently attached.
Untitled Vampire Spoof: From the same folks that brought us Date Movie, Epic Movie, and Disaster Movie. Can't be much worse than New Moon, at least.
My anticipation for these movies is such that I'm tempted to cryogenically freeze myself and set the unthaw mechanism for their respective release dates, but unfortunately that technology doesn't exist yet.
