Many well-known actors have characterized their profession as being no more than a sophisticated level of child-like make-believe. Whether or not such an assessment is valid, it might help explain why actors such as Robert Duvall, Clint Eastwood, Morgan Freeman, and Michael Caine (amongst others) are still holding strong in their respective careers to this day. Take Robert Duvall for example: this legendary actor has been acting in movies for nearly 50 years, and has given us timeless performances in such diverse classics as M*A*S*H, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II, Network, and Apocalypse Now. Turning 80-years-old on January 5th, Robert Duvall shows no signs of slowing down. This Friday, July 30th, the comedy/drama Get Low will have a limited release in theatres throughout the United States. In the film, Duvall plays the lead role of a real-life hermit from the 1930s named Felix Bush. Even though it is a low-budget independent movie, Get Low promises to be well-worth viewing, if only to witness a near-80-year-old man flex his acting chops as well as any up-and-coming actor of today.
With Get Low, we are given a wonderful example of how some actors, despite being old in age, remain youthful through acting. Perhaps the finest example of such inspirational acting comes from an actor who also happens to be a director: Clint Eastwood. Having recently turned 80-years-old on May 31st of this year, Clint Eastwood is arguably in the prime of his career, as he has made some of his best movies as a director in the last 7 years alone. Think about the following lineup of movies: Mystic River, Million Dollar Baby, Flags of Our Fathers, Letters from Iwo Jima, Changeling, Gran Torino, and Invictus. That list makes for seven great movies in seven years. Such a feat is rarely accomplished by any filmmaker, let alone a man who was roughly 72-79-years-old during that span! If that weren't impressive enough, Eastwood acted as a main character in two of those movies, and even wrote the music for four of them! Proof once again that artistic creativity knows no age limit.
With a voice practically as old as narration itself, Morgan Freeman has more than proved himself as being one of the greatest actors of his or any other generation. Whether he is playing ‘Eddie Scrap-Iron Dupris’ in his Oscar-winning performance in Million Dollar Baby, or ‘Lucius Fox’ in Christopher Nolan’s ongoing Batman Trilogy, Freeman continues to stand strong, full of confidence and compassionate humility. Such traits have followed Freeman throughout his illustrious career, and not only have they helped him become such a beloved actor amongst critics and audiences alike, but they might also have contributed to his longevity as an actor. Despite having been only 52-years-old when Driving Miss Daisy was released in 1989, Morgan Freeman has exuded the qualities of a wise old grandfather for as long as he’s been acting. He is steady and assured in his art, and for that we can all be grateful; for surely his career today must merely be only the beginning of his third - yet hopefully not final - act.
Co-starring alongside Freeman in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins and The Dark Knight was renowned British actor Sir Michael Caine. With these two latest renditions of the Batman franchise, as well as the upcoming 2012 release of Nolan’s third Batman project, Michael Caine has proven himself to be a perfect casting choice for Batman’s loyal butler, Alfred. Caine has always been such a versatile actor, as proven with such contrasting performances in movies like The Man Who Would Be King, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Cider House Rules, Austin Powers in Goldmember, and The Weather Man; his work in Nolan’s revitalized Batman trilogy has, so far, been no different. He turned 77-years-old this past March, and is in the midst of celebrating his 60th anniversary as a film and television actor. With a small yet key role in this summer’s blockbuster smash-hit Inception, and an animation role in next year’s Gnomeo and Juliet, it seems like Caine is assuring his fans that he has no plans of slowing down any time soon. But as with fellow colleagues Robert Duvall, Clint Eastwood, and Morgan Freeman, there seems to be no real reason why he would; after all: once an actor, always a child.
