Never before would I have thought to say anything remotely like this in regards to a horror movie, but, thanks to the manner through which Paranormal Activity ended, I don’t think I have much of a choice: more likely than not, we’d all be damned if Paranormal Activity did not spawn a sequel. We can be thankful that Hollywood studios know a good thing when they see it, for come October 22nd, 2010, Paranormal Activity 2 will be released in theatres across North America.
Just recently, Paramount Pictures released a teaser trailer for Paranormal Activity 2. The studio then followed suit this past weekend, as the movie’s first photo still officially was released to the public. In both the film’s trailer and photo still, it seems pretty evident that Paranormal Activity 2 contains all the hard-biting supernatural suspense that made its predecessor so successful. I first saw the original film on dvd, and was impressed by how intensely real the movie came across, despite its primary focus on the supernatural. Too often, films dealing with supernatural subject material come across as being silly, pretentious, and, in the worst of examples, not even scary. The success of Paranormal Activity was due, in part, to all the things that were neither shown nor said; its filmmakers knew the power of relative silence, and, as a result, a legitimately frightening horror movie was made. Let’s just hope that the success of Paranormal Activity didn’t get to their heads, so that Paranormal Activity 2 can become an anomaly of a sequel that is as good, if not better, than its original precursor.
The only version of Paranormal Activity that I enjoyed was done by Rifftrax. When I saw it with them, I didn't realize this wasn't a B-movie. I can't believe people paid to see it in theatres, and now they're making a sequal. Well, I guess it's another movie for the Riffers to make fun of.
