DVD Picks: '50/50', 'Wings', and 'Paranormal Activity 3'

50/50 (8/10)

If you didn't get the opportunity to see last year's critically acclaimed "cancer comedy" 50/50, now's your chance to see what all the fuss was about. Out on Blu-ray and DVD this week, this third directorial feature of Jonathan Levine's has just the right blend of comedic and dramatic warmth to get you through a cold, windy night in the remaining months of winter. Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Anjelica Huston, 50/50 delivers a unique combination of raunchy comedy, dark and witty humour, and tear-jerking pathos that blend together surprisingly well.

DVD Picks: '50/50', 'Wings', and 'Paranormal Activity 3'

Both the Blu-ray and DVD formats of 50/50 offer a healthy dose of extra features. Included therein are deleted scenes, an often hilarious and sporadically insightful audio commentary with Seth Rogen, producers Ben Karlin and Evan Goldberg, writer Will Reiser, and director Jonathan Levine, a behind-the-scenes piece called Seek and Destroy, and two featurettes entitled The Story of 50/50 and Life Imitates Art, in which cast and crew members reflect on the story behind the film and the real-life similarities thereof.

Wings (9/10)

It's only fitting that on the same day the black-and-white silent film The Artist is crowned with ten Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director, Wings, the first - and only silent - movie ever to win the Best Picture Oscar is released for the first time on Blu-ray. Originally released on May 19th, 1927 in San Antonio, Texas, Wings was director William A. Wellman's cinematic ode to the American fighter pilots of World War I.

This monument in aerial photography and combat flying sequences is more than worth a first or second - or third - look, especially through the home entertainment experience of this superb Blu-ray restoration from Paramount.

DVD Picks: '50/50', 'Wings', and 'Paranormal Activity 3'

Admittedly, the extra features on this single-disc edition are a bit slight, but there's certainly enough insightful material to keep one's interest afloat. Included in the extra content are the following documentaries/shorts: "Wings: Grandeur in the Sky", "Restoring the Power and Beauty of Wings", and "Dogfight!". The film's audio/visual transfer is first-rate. Don't miss this one!

Ratings: IMDb - 7.8/10

Paranormal Activity 3 (6.5/10)

Relatively fresh off its box-office triumph in October, Paranormal Activity 3 looks to carryover some of its financial mojo to the market of Blu-rays and DVDs, with this two-disc BD/DVD set released today from Paramount. Probably the weakest link in the series so far, this third instalment of what will inevitably be a long drawn-out franchise of low-budget horror movies receives a passing grade for two reasons: 1) it still makes for a genuinely creepy audio/visual experience, and 2) it at least tries to insert something of a story in a series that is quickly starting to wear out its welcome.

As far as generic horror movie prequels are concerned, I've definitely seen far worse than Paranormal Activity 3. Predictable as it may be, its chilling use of cinematic trickery (i.e. that of editing, camerawork, and acting) remains a highly effective tool in giving its audience the heebie-jeebies treatment it craves.

DVD Picks: '50/50', 'Wings', and 'Paranormal Activity 3'

The extra features on this two-disc set are scarce to the point of "why bother?". Aside from the Digital/UV/DVD copies, you have option a): a two-minute "Scare Montage" in which one of the main characters frightens another through a brief series of pranks, or option b): a pointless 56-second wedding video commercial promoting the occupation of the abovementioned prankster character.

Looks like it is an ok week for DVD releases. 50/50 was a good movie, but there seems to be a trend of cancer comedies and I hope I don’t see anymore for a while. They could wear out the idea very quickly. I have Paranormal Activity 3 at the top of my Blockbuster Movie Pass queue and I should have it by the weekend. I just watched the other 2 on Epix so I thought I would give the prequel a try. If it is good I will buy the collection but I wanted to rent it first before I wasted the money. I find that I am doing that more and more. I used to run out and buy the latest video games and movies but I ended up with a lot of bad movies or games. For $10 per month The Blockbuster Movie Pass is a great addition to my DISH service and I have streaming content access too. It has saved me a lot of money on those bad purchases. A coworker here at DISH recently showed me that they can even stream Blockbuster content on the iPad now!

Ken/Toronto, good on you for writing and sharing your story.
I agree; "50/50" was a beautiful movie, more about friendship and relationships than disease. Watching this movie was a wonderful, tender, moving experience

I avoided seeing "50/50" in the theatres 'cause I thought it would be a total bummer. Watching it last night on Blu-Ray, I was charmed, amused, deeply moved and astonished by its unerring honesty. I am a cancer survivor, having recently surmounted late-stage lymphoma. My wacky best friend was my caregiver (he dressed up as "Wolverine" during my final chemo session at Princess Margaret, making me and all the other patients there howl)...and has since died himself - from, yes, cancer. This disease has impacted, and will impact, on many Canadian families. "50/50" confronts the social phobia this disease often engenders; it deals w/ chemo treatment head-on; it illuminates friendship, bonding and caregiving. It is, in a word, wonderful, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogan and the entire cast are brilliant. Please people, do not be frightened by this movie; it's quite fabulous. Clearly one of the Best Flicks of The Year. Thanks for reading.
