Things don’t seem to be going well for Hollywood: Attendance in 2011 was at its lowest point since 1992, overall business was down by 4.9% percent compared to 2010 and down by 4.5% compared to 2009—a drop-off that not even the lack of a new movie by James Cameron can fully account for—and despite continued insistence on marketing movies exclusively at teens, the majority of movie tickets are being purchased by older audiences.
All of this begs the question: What is Hollywood doing wrong?

With the dawn of a new year, we at inMovies would like to take this opportunity to give back. So we decided to choose a needy movie star—one who’s had a tough year both personally and professionally—and help our hapless celebrity by devising a list of New Year’s resolutions to encourage better luck in 2012.

It didn’t take long to find a suitable candidate for our unsolicited advice: Nicolas Cage. The past year has been disastrous for the once-great actor. As a nurturing type of person and soon-to-be mom, I decided to practice my mothering skills by advising him on personal matters, while Mark—who holds a degree in Film Studies—opted to assist our man with professional advice. So listen up, Nic! We know it’s been a rough year, but for goodness sakes, you’re the star of Raising Arizona and Leaving Las Vegas, and we have faith that you can come back if only you adopt these handy resolutions.

North Korea’s dictator has died, leaving behind a starving nation, a pronounced nuclear threat, a legacy of political violence and a massive DVD collection. You see, Kim Jong-il was not just a despot, but also an avid cinephile
